Always Improving

Always Improving

It takes quite a bit of purposeful practice to become what some would consider an expert at something. Some may even look to the 10,000 hour rule. Recently, in the age of ever changing analytics and technology, change has been at the forefront of all industry. Being able to recognize and adapt is something that each of us is required to do, otherwise we will feel left behind.

But adapting is not something new. It’s something we are programmed to do. If we can’t find success in one place, we will change our strategy or change our location. This works in any context. Our experiences are what differentiate us all. What inspires us is a combination of where we’ve been, what we’ve seen, and how it has affected us.

For us, our motivation is to always be learning. We are eager to find new ways, refine old tactics, devise new plans, and sometimes just to straight-up conquer mountains. It’s about what each situation calls for. The main thing is that we are always able to improve. The realization of this statement is enlightening. No matter how old or experienced, the journey is never finished. We can always get better.

Context is another issue that many overlook. Context allows us to teach. To learn. To explain. There are two sides to context: what you see and what you know. If you don’t know what you’re looking for, but someone who does helps you to see it, all of a sudden you can’t un-see it. It’s learned.

Development is something we don’t stop doing from the moment you first show up on this earth. Our experiences shape our future. What we learn along the way will dictate what we experience. And who our mentors are will determine how motivated we stay. Surround yourself with good people who care and limits will be an afterthought.

To quote the legendary Muhammad Ali:

Impossible is just a big word thrown around by small men who find it easier to live in the world they’ve been given than to explore the power they have to change it. Impossible is not a fact. It’s an opinion. Impossible is not a declaration. It’s a dare. Impossible is potential. Impossible is temporary. Impossible is nothing.”
